Northern Convoys (2)
In the year 2005, we expect instant news – reports of events in real time. This is especially true for reports of wars and terrorist or other disasters. There often seem to be more TV crews at the scene than there are soldiers or police, all falling over each other to be the first to bring the news to our radios and screens.

Volgograd
Volgograd One of the reasons that I chose to come to Samara was the location, down in the south of Russia in the Vogla region. I thought there would be a more friendly climate (so -20 degrees when I arrived was a bit of a shock!) and knew that it was close (in Russian terms!) to many places that I wanted to visit. Later this month I will be visiting Kazan and Nizhny Novgorod, and in March I travelled to Volgograd, a town that I had wanted to visit for a long time, having heard so much about the Battle of Stalingrad, probably the key battle of the Second World War.

The 60th anniversary of the end of the war
Dear Reader,
On May 8-9 the whole world celebrated 60th anniversary of the end of the war. World War II.
I am not going to tell you about it. You have heard and read a lot about it lately. I am sure you watched the Victory parade broadcast on TV from Moscow.

Life Story
Life Story I was born in London, England, just before the outbreak of WWII. I can remember little of the war, although the East End where I lived was a frequent target of German bombers and many neighbouring houses were destroyed. There was never any question in our minds that we would win and we were greatly encouraged when, after a couple of years, the Russians joined in too. As always, the Americans were late — they like to join the winning side!
